Book Four (Spring 2026)

Cơm Tấm: Broken Rice

In Cơm Tấm, Davis takes us back to the beginning of it all.

Preface from Com Tam:

Cơm Tấm means broken rice. Broken rice is a specialty in Vietnam, whereas most places call it the dregs of the rice harvest. All the little broken pieces of rice left on the floor during milling. All the discarded bits and fragments undesirable for the bags of premium-grade rice. Whereas most rice-producing regions reserve this “waste” for consumption on the farm or to supplement livestock feed, in Vietnam, it has its own section on the menu. The Vietnamese art of turning what would often be undesirable to most into gourmet treats that dazzle the taste buds. There was something about this concept the Vietnamese seemed to specialize in that broadened my view of the world and ultimately left me with a life far more fulfilling than I ever believed possible. When I left for Vietnam, I saw my life in many ways as broken. Failed marriages, the death of a child, a period of wrongful incarceration, a career in ruins, a life broken and unrecognizable.

What happened in Vietnam caused me to re-evaluate everything. My life was not broken, I just hadn’t yet realized how to maximize its potential, and turn a seemingly undesirable position that I found myself in, into a gourmet dish, that everyone wanted to order. It would be all the little things, like flying over Iran or the Vietnamese’ almost complete amnesia about the war years, that slowly began to put my life in focus. Put the universe into focus. Amid all this revelation, a shining beacon would guide me across the rocky shoreline, home. Meeting the Lady from An Lao would transform far more than my understanding of Vietnam, but of all life, and help me shape this life into the vision I had always had for myself. Successful, fulfilled, and happy. This is the story of how all that came to be.”

Through vivid storytelling, Cơm Tấm: Broken Rice is a travel memoir and a testament to resilience, the power of perspective, and the art of finding beauty in the seemingly broken pieces of our lives.
